Taylor Gregory Butterfield’s approach combines the functional programming and space planning efforts with the early aspects of architectural design and facilities planning. Pursuing these two objectives simultaneously allows our team to test the initial results against one another to assure that a satisfying outcome is achievable for both goals. As an example, we can utilize a computer-based program to track space program against project budget cost models in order to keep current analysis of the project size, massing, and construction costs. Through this effort, TGB is able to develop a solution that can quantitatively and qualitatively enhance your organization’s vision, goals, and objectives. The following are key elements we employ in the planning, design, and construction of healthcare projects:

Expertise
Our experience is broad, working with inpatient facilities and outpatient organizations. Our clients include private organizations, which include both profit and not-for-profit groups and Public Hospital Districts. This spectrum of work provides us with an expanded view of current approaches to healthcare delivery. We sometimes engage specialty designers to assist us in the development of highly specialized medical facilities. This same broad experience also applies to the forms of Construction Contracts we use, including hard bid projects, negotiated contracts, and various forms of design-build relationships.

Process Management
Healthcare projects must be managed well. This means clearly established schedules and budgets, and clear communication of objectives and decisions. Early in the process, we establish a detailed schedule and commit our consultants to its adherence. Scheduling discipline ensures timely decisions, good coordination, and minimizes additional fees and change orders. Budgets are also established and updated at each phase of the project. Depending upon the needs of our clients, we may assist in developing a complete project proforma that estimates and chronicles all of the costs associated with the project. Appropriate communication is essential to a successful project. We have refined our communication tools to ensure that all parties stay informed throughout design and construction.

Clear Definition of Project Process
Most healthcare projects require extensive input from a number of users, support staff, ancillary service providers, financial advisors, and design consultants. To obtain appropriate input and to build consensus, we work with a core team to clearly define each step of the design process before we begin. We address who should be involved and when, identify tasks each person must perform, and when decisions must be made to maintain the project schedule and budget objectives. As we work through each cycle of design, options and criteria are developed for use in the evaluation process. We then assemble a group of users and design team members to make those evaluations.

Design
For TGB, achieving design excellence is important in every project. Good design is often a by-product of a well-managed process. When schedules are appropriate, budgets are clear, the needs and goals of a client are well understood, and the project’s critical success factors are established and agreed upon, the designers then have the greatest freedom to consider truly innovative design solutions.

Interior Design involves developing an understanding of our client’s needs, spatial expectations, then creating an overall design aesthetic. As part of this process, we also work with the client to help them select forms, finishes and furnishings that complement their design intent for the project.

Our firm’s culture encourages this search for strong design solutions for well-defined problems. Employing office-wide design critiques is one method that we use to constantly search for ways to refine proven design concepts as well as to search for new and innovative ideas to apply to each project.

Progress toward the completion of short interval design tasks, as well as toward completion of the project deliverables, is monitored periodically through ongoing interdisciplinary project team meetings to enhance communication and coordination, and through periodic progress printings of the design documents to be used for coordination and monitoring of actual documented progress.
